Every day on the News there are reports of bad things happening all over the world. There are terrorist groups killing thousands of people, pedophiles abusing children, organizations trafficking people for big money. There is domestic violence in homes all over the country and children suffering because of broken and dysfunctional homes, alcoholic parents, cyber-bullying and on and on…

I can hardly believe it – but many people blame it on God. It’s people doing all these things…right? Yet the question seems to be: why does God let this happen?

It amazes me! These things are happening in the world, because people don’t want to do things God’s way. They say they don’t believe in Him, yet as soon as something extremely good – or bad – happens, the first thing they do is call on a God they say they don’t believe in.

Oh my God is the exclamation that usually comes out of their mouth first.

It amazes me.

I have been a Christian since I was 5 years old. My parents weren’t Christians, but they let me go to Sunday School, where I learnt to love God because He is good. I found that I wanted all the things that He values, like truth and love, peace and goodness and kindness. Does that mean I was always good and kind and truthful?

Sorry…but no! I was just an average kid who was selfish and self-centred and told lies to keep myself out of trouble.

When I asked Jesus to forgive me for all the wrong things I did, and asked Him to come into my life, He did just that and He started to change me into a better, more loving person.  I’m 72 now, and I’m still a work in progress! We humans are slow learners when it comes to living right.

The great thing about God is that once we have received Jesus as our Savior, God doesn’t hold us accountable for our sin, though He does hold us accountable for our behavior. He just keeps on patiently working in our hearts, to make us more like Jesus.

The best thing is, He hears and answers our prayers. He always answers anyone’s prayer for forgiveness, if they believe Jesus died to pay the price for their sin and they are willing to live God’s way going forward.

You know what really amazes me? Most people would rather live with feeling miserable and guilty about their sin, than to let God forgive them. I guess they don’t want to admit that God is real, because it would mean they would have to change the way they live.

The trouble is, that unless they are willing to do it God’s way – they are missing out on all the benefits…amazing benefits.

For instance, if you decide to live God’s way – He will be a Father to you – a good Father. You may never have had a dad at home, or you may have had one who was mean or abusive or didn’t value you as a person. God will never treat you like that.

He made you and He loves you, regardless of what you have done or what you have become. He values you and wants to see you succeed in life. He wants you to enjoy the birds and the trees, the rivers and the mountains, the vast ocean and the fluffy white clouds in a blue sky…all the beautiful things He has made.

He wants you to have a good marriage and wonderful children, to have a job that you enjoy and peace in your family, good food on the table, and plenty of love and kindness to go around.

Yet the Bible says in Romans 1:19-32 (NLT)

19They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. 20For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

21Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. 22Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. 23And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

24So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.26That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

28Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. 29Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.

It amazes me!
