Many people think that we need to go in to full on attack against the enemy, to win spiritual battles.
The truth is – the battle has already been won. Our job is to resist the devil, and enforce the victory that Christ has already won, so that the enemy doesn’t rob us of the victory we already have.
“For this purpose was the Son of God manifest, that He might destroy the works of the evil one” – and He did!
In Ephesians 6 we read about the armour of God, and we are told to lift up over everything the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. So the faith God has given us, and the Word of God are two of the weapons we can use against the evil one.
The weapons with which God has equipped us don’t look like weapons of steel, in fact they don’t seem like weapons at all. Nevertheless, they are real weapons, and they are really powerful.
The first weapon we’re looking at is Praise. Praise is so powerful, as we know from the story of Paul and Silas in prison. There’s an old chorus called ‘Praise is the power of heaven’ – and it’s true. One of the ways we resist the enemy, is by refusing to give him the attention he wants. After all – God is our Father – and we should be paying attention to him.
The next weapon we’re looking at is Joy. It doesn’t sound like a weapon, does it? But we know that “the joy of the Lord is our strength” – and it’s that strength that we can use against the enemy – not physically of course, but mentally and emotionally we can use our spiritual strength to stay focussed on God and not be distracted. We can resist the devil by using that strength to lift up the shield of faith.
And then – amazingly – Love is a weapon! That’s a surprise tactic to throw the enemy off guard. Just when he’s using someone to abuse or attack us, we come back with a soft answer and show God’s love to the person, and it completely upsets the enemy’s plans.
When you stay close to God, under the shadow of His Wings, the evil one can have no real influence in your life. Nothing can ultimately harm you, though circumstances of life may hurt you severely, God will always turn it around for your good, if you are putting your trust in Him.
Have you ever seen a little child hide behind her mother’s skirt? Or a boy boasting that ‘my dad is bigger than your dad’? These children know the secret of safety and security. As God’s children, we can know the safety and security of staying close to God.
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you: because he trusts in you.” – Isaiah 26:3 KJ2000
- Do you still let the enemy intimidate you?
- Think of a situation you are facing right now, and discuss what weapons you might need to use.
- Pray for one another, calling the works of the enemy to nothing, and praising God for a good outcome.
- Decide how you can show the love of God to someone the enemy is using to attack you and determine to put that plan into action.
When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, and maintain the kind of lifestyle that enables you to stay full of the Holy Spirit, then you will bring power and peace to the atmosphere around you.
Have you noticed that some people change the atmosphere, just by walking into the room? You can one of those people, carrying the Presence of God with you wherever you go.
